Born in 1910, George Matheson lived a life full of music until the spring of 2004 when he laid down his bow and put his fiddle to rest. Living his life as a successful business man, George found his true passion in music. As a young child, George taught himself how to play the fiddle and continued to play and perform his entire life. Although music brought him so much joy, his greatest pride was in his family. George inspired all his grandchildren to play instruments at an early age. Today, his family are accomplished musicians and three of his grandchildren along with his daughter and husband, are known as “The Walters Family Band”, performing for audiences all over the world.
To carry on George’s legacy, The George Matheson Fiddle Foundation has been organized.
Each year, a local child under the age of 16, with a strong love of music and the desire to play the fiddle will be eligible to receive a fiddle from the foundation. One fiddle will be presented each year at Christmas to a very deserving child. The foundation will choose a different recipient every year.
